A. Lietz Dating Table

Here you will find information about how to date your A. Lietz antique survey instruments.

Estimated Adolph Lietz Numbers and Dating

Since the Adolph Lietz records appear to be lost we have put this information together based on observed instruments using invoices, design data and patent information.  We have also put together a list of instruments to help in dating these instruments.  This list is limited and we are always looking for more confirmed data that we can add.  If you have invoices or confirmed instruments dates and would like to share please let us know and we will gladly add the information.

Here Is What We Know;

Four digit serial numbers below 5000, mostly if not all in the 1000's were likely made prior to 1906. Instruments serial numbers 5000 and higher were made after 1906.

The reason for this is in 1906 the great San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fires destroyed most of the A. Lietz Co. building, including most of the records.   Manufacturing log books starting afterwards only showed serial numbers 5000 and higher.

Some of the instruments observed have been confirmed with invoices directly from Lietz and will include a month and year.  All other numbers are based on estimated manufacturing numbers.
