C.L. Berger & Sons Dating Table

Here you will find information about how to date your C.L. Berger & Sons antique survey instruments.

We Offer C.L. Berger & Sons Instrument Research

If you are researching your C.L. Berger & Sons instrument we may be able to help.  We have copies of the original records for instruments dating from 1898 until 1955.  Please email us the serial number of your instrument and we will see if we have the original build records.  If we do have the records we will ask you to make a $20.00 donation to cover our research time and once we receive the donation we will email you a digital copy of the record that you can print out on your computer.

What is nice about having the original build sheets is you can sometimes tell if an instrument has been repaired by options that might have been added or changed. Things like the vertical circles or Arcs, or maybe a gradienter was added after the fact, or a solar attachment, etc. Here is some fun things you can find out when you have this information.

Below is an instrument that we sold that was originally purchased by JD Rockefeller when he was building one of his homes. We have included an image of the Build Sheet so you can see an example.

***Please do not make a donation until you hear from us that we actually have the records for your instrument.***

We use PayPal for our donations but you do not need a PayPal account to make a donation.  PayPal works just like a credit card Processing Service and if you have a credit card you can make a donation without having a PayPal account.  For more information about research please contact us by email.

C.L. Berger & Sons Numbers

When Berger made instruments they would often run batches of instrument types like levels or a specific model transits even though they did not have orders for all serial numbers in the batch run. They would put these on the shelf and pull them as needed which created some odd sequencing when putting these tables together as there are instruments out of sequential order in a given year. These numbers were taken directly from the available original C.L. Berger & Sons build sheets. In the chart below is a list of the year and the lowest first serial numbers from that specific year. Some instruments have been sold multiple times which is why there are multiple serial numbers listed and they appear to be out of order.

Example: If your serial number is 5220 than your approximate year of manufacture is 1905. There could be a 1-3 year deferential based on when the actual instrument was made and when it was sold.
